Fargo SmartGuard™ Details

The Facts

The SmartGuard option allows you to restrict access to your printer/encoder by requiring that a custom access card be inserted into the Security Card Slot in order for the printer to operate. This custom access card is created by using the SmartGuard software to encode a password of your choice onto one of FARGO's unique SmartGuard Access Cards. You can set up these cards to work on one specific printer or on multiple printers at a single location.

SmartGuard makes your entire ID card system more secure by ensuring accountability for every card produced.  When you register your printer/encoder with FARGO, you are added to our database and assigned a Personal Identification Number (PIN) of your choice. Registering protects you if your card is stolen, as FARGO will give a remote access code only to you - the registered user

SmartGuard Printer Security is included with DTC515, DTC525, Pro-LX, and HDP820 printer/encoders.

The SmartGuard package is shipped inside the printer/encoder box and contains the following components:

“SmartGuard Security Feature” CD-ROM with Online User’s Guide
“SmartGuard Security Feature” Quick Start Guide instruction sheet
One “SmartGuard Access Card” smart card
“SmartGuard Security Feature” Registration Form

FARGO provides a SmartGuard registration service that aims to protect our customers in the event your printer/encoder(s) or SmartGuard Access Card(s) is lost or stolen. By filling out the included registration form and returning it to FARGO, your customer will be registered in FARGO's database and assigned a Personal Identification Number (PIN) of their choosing.

Benefits

Prevent the creation of fake IDs and ensure accountability for every card produced

SmartGuard allows you to grant or deny printer/encoder access to operators. Only those with authorized SmartGuard Access Cards can unlock and operate the printer/encoder. Anyone who does not have an authorized access card will be locked out.
Guard against unauthorized use of high-security overlaminates

To prevent lamination of fake IDs with proprietary holographic overlaminates, lock the printer/encoder to unauthorized users with a SmartGuard Access Card.
Foil thieves and would-be counterfeiters

If an employee is suspected of using the printer/encoder to create unauthorized cards, the card program administrator can change the SmartGuard Access Card’s code at any time, rendering the employee’s access card useless.
Prohibit the operation of a printer/encoder in the event it is stolen

When a printer/encoder and SmartGuard password are registered with FARGO, FARGO will provide only the rightful owner with an active remote printer/encoder access code.

What if my Access Card is lost or stolen?

A registration form is included along with the SmartGuard software. This form is intended to aid in protecting you in the event your printer/encoder(s) or SmartGuard Access Card(s) are lost or stolen. By filling out this form and returning it to FARGO, you will be registered into FARGO's database and assigned a Personal Identification Number (PIN) of your choosing. Once registered, you are protected in two ways:

1. If the SmartGuard Access Card(s) is lost or stolen, you call FARGO and give your name, company name, and PIN. You will be given a remote access code specific to your printer that will instantly disable the SmartGuard Security Feature. SmartGuard can then be enabled with a new access card and password, rendering the lost or stolen card(s) useless.
2. If your printer/encoder is stolen, it will be useless to the thieves, since FARGO will not divulge the remote access code unless the proper name, company name, and PIN are provided for that specific printer serial number.

It is very important that you are registered, since this is the only way you will be eligible to receive a remote printer access code. To protect against unauthorized personnel or thieves disabling your SmartGuard security, printer users who are not registered will be required to send their printer/encoder back to FARGO to have SmartGuard disabled. In this case, the user is subject to a disabling fee and all shipping charges.
